That gives you a much better selection of yachts, cabin layouts and crews, particularly if you plan to visit between December and April, the main yacht charter season in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
If you want to charter over Christmas or New Year, start even earlier. Around 9 to 12 months ahead is sensible, and the most sought-after yachts can disappear sooner. Current Grenadines charter guidance consistently identifies the festive period as the first part of the calendar to fill.
The important point is that booking early is usually less about finding a yacht and more about securing the right yacht.
When Should You Book for December to April?
December through April is the main Grenadines charter season, with warm weather, reliable trade winds and some of the best conditions for sailing between Bequia, Mustique, Canouan and the Tobago Cays.
For these months, 6 to 12 months in advance is a good target.
Booking early matters particularly if you:
Want a specific yacht
Need four or five guest cabins
Are travelling with 8 to 12 guests
Want a Jacuzzi, Jet Skis or specific water toys
Need fixed travel dates
Want one of the more popular crewed catamarans
Are planning around school holidays
The Grenadines also have a smaller charter fleet than destinations such as the BVI or Bahamas. That means there may be fewer comparable alternatives once the best yacht for your group has been booked.
If your dates are flexible and you are not attached to one particular yacht, you can usually book later.
How Early Should You Book Christmas and New Year?
If you want to spend Christmas or New Year in the Grenadines, I would start looking approximately 9 to 12 months ahead.
These are among the most competitive charter weeks in the entire Caribbean, not just the Grenadines. The most popular yachts are commonly committed many months ahead, and Mustique becomes particularly sought after around the festive season.
Holiday charters can also operate differently from normal weeks.
Some yachts apply premium Christmas or New Year rates, require specific embarkation dates or impose minimum charter periods. The exact conditions vary by yacht.
So if your dates are fixed around December 20 to early January, this is not the period I would leave until the last minute.
For a particularly popular yacht, large group or very specific cabin configuration, beginning the search around one year before departure is perfectly reasonable.
What About Easter and the Bequia Easter Regatta?
Easter is another period worth booking earlier than normal.
The Bequia Easter Regatta brings additional activity to Admiralty Bay and is one of the major sailing events in the Grenadines calendar. Current charter guidance identifies Easter as another peak within the wider December-to-April season.
If you specifically want to be in Bequia during the regatta or your travel dates are tied to Easter school holidays, I would aim for approximately 6 to 9 months ahead.
Outside those event weeks, March and April can still offer an excellent combination of strong cruising conditions and slightly more flexibility than Christmas and New Year.
Can You Book a Grenadines Yacht Charter Last Minute?
Yes.
A Grenadines yacht charter can sometimes be arranged only a few weeks before departure, particularly if you are flexible about:
Which yacht you charter
Your exact dates
Where you embark
Whether you start in St Vincent or Grenada
The precise itinerary
Charter calendars change. Cancellations occur, yachts reposition and occasional gaps appear between existing bookings.
But last-minute booking reverses the normal process.
Instead of choosing your favorite yacht and then selecting dates, you are choosing from whatever yachts remain available for your dates.
That can work extremely well for a couple or small group with flexible travel plans. It is much less attractive if you need a specific yacht for ten guests during February half-term.
Outside the busiest periods, booking around 3 to 6 months ahead can still provide a reasonable selection. Broader yacht-charter guidance suggests even shorter booking windows can work outside peak weeks when the guest is flexible.
So When Should You Book?
A good rule for a Grenadines yacht charter is:
Christmas & New Year: 9 to 12 months ahead, preferably earlier for the most popular yachts.
December to April: 6 to 12 months ahead.
Easter: Around 6 to 9 months ahead.
Shoulder season: Around 3 to 6 months is often sufficient.
Last minute: Possible, but expect a smaller yacht selection.
There is rarely a disadvantage to beginning the search early.
Yacht charter pricing does not generally work like airline tickets where booking eleven months ahead automatically guarantees a cheaper fare. The real advantage is choice.
You have more yachts to compare, more cabin configurations available and a much better chance of securing the crew, amenities and itinerary that actually suit your group.
For most guests, I would begin planning a Grenadines yacht charter around 6 to 12 months before departure.
And if you are dreaming of Christmas or New Year among Mustique, Bequia and the Tobago Cays, start closer to a year in advance.
