Grenadines vs BVI Yacht Charter: Which Caribbean Destination Is Better?

The Grenadines and the British Virgin Islands are two of the Caribbean's greatest yacht charter destinations, but they offer noticeably different experiences.

The BVI is the easier, more established choice. Islands sit close together, passages are short, yacht infrastructure is excellent and there is almost always another beach bar, restaurant or marina within easy reach. It is one of the best destinations in the world for a first yacht charter.

The Grenadines feel more adventurous and untouched. Cruising between Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays takes you through a quieter side of the Caribbean, with fewer yachts, less development and more emphasis on remote anchorages, snorkeling and the natural beauty of the islands.

So which is better?

This is probably the biggest difference between the two destinations.

The BVI is exceptionally compact. Tortola, Norman Island, Cooper Island, Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke can all fit naturally into a one-week itinerary, with short passages allowing you to spend relatively little of each day underway. Its reliable trade winds, sheltered anchorages and close island spacing have helped make the BVI one of the world's most established yacht charter destinations.

That makes the BVI extremely forgiving. You can have breakfast at one island, stop somewhere else for snorkeling and still reach a completely different anchorage before sunset.

The Grenadines also work beautifully for island hopping, but the experience feels more like a journey.

A typical itinerary might move from St Vincent or Grenada through Bequia, Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau, Union Island and the Tobago Cays. Distances between many neighboring islands are still manageable, but there are longer and more exposed passages than you typically encounter on a classic BVI itinerary. Steady easterly trade winds make the region particularly rewarding for sailing yachts and catamarans.

Winner: BVI for easy cruising. Grenadines for a more adventurous sailing experience.

There is no bad choice here.

The BVI gives you famous Caribbean scenery almost every day. You can explore the granite formations of The Baths on Virgin Gorda, anchor beside the beaches of Jost Van Dyke, cruise to Anegada or snorkel around the smaller islands and reefs scattered throughout the archipelago.

The Grenadines, however, have something slightly wilder.

Tobago Cays Marine Park is the obvious highlight. Its small uninhabited islands, coral reefs and shallow turquoise lagoons create one of the most memorable anchorages in the Caribbean, with green and hawksbill turtles commonly encountered around the protected waters. Mayreau's Saltwhistle Bay, Mustique's beaches and the coastline around Bequia add even more variety.

The difference is less about which destination has prettier water and more about the setting around it.

In the BVI, paradise often comes with a beach bar nearby.

In the Grenadines, paradise is more likely to mean a quiet anchorage, a reef and a handful of neighboring yachts.

Winner: Grenadines, particularly for snorkeling, wildlife and unspoiled scenery.

If your perfect yacht charter includes getting off the yacht every evening, the BVI has a clear advantage.

Jost Van Dyke alone gives you some of the Caribbean's most recognizable beach-bar culture, while islands such as Tortola, Virgin Gorda and Cooper Island offer restaurants, resorts, bars and places to socialize ashore. You can spend the day cruising and still have somewhere lively to visit that evening.

The Grenadines are quieter.

That does not mean there is nothing ashore. Bequia has restaurants, beach bars and a relaxed waterfront atmosphere. Mustique offers a more exclusive social scene, including the famous Basil's Bar, while Canouan has high-end resorts and dining.

But nightlife is not the main reason to charter here.

Many of the best evenings in the Grenadines are spent anchored somewhere remote, eating dinner onboard and watching the islands disappear into darkness around you.

If that sounds perfect, choose the Grenadines.

If you want cocktails, restaurants and a different beach bar every night, choose the BVI.

Winner: BVI.

For a first yacht charter, I would generally recommend the BVI.

The cruising ground is compact, passages are short and there is an enormous amount of charter infrastructure. It is easy to build a seven-day itinerary that mixes beaches, snorkeling, restaurants, water sports and time onboard without requiring long passages.

That also makes the BVI particularly strong for families with younger children. Less time underway means more time swimming, using the water toys and exploring ashore.

The Grenadines are still perfectly suitable for families, especially aboard a spacious catamaran or motor yacht, but they become particularly attractive for couples, honeymooners and experienced charter guests who want somewhere quieter.

Mustique brings privacy and understated luxury. Tobago Cays provides remote anchorages and exceptional snorkeling. Bequia has genuine Caribbean character, while Mayreau offers the kind of small-island atmosphere that is becoming increasingly difficult to find elsewhere.

The Grenadines are also a strong choice if you have already chartered in the BVI, Bahamas or Mediterranean and now want somewhere that feels less familiar. Current charter guides repeatedly position the islands as one of the Caribbean's more under-the-radar cruising grounds.

Families & first-time charterers: BVI.

Couples, privacy & experienced charterers: Grenadines.

Both destinations work with either, but their personalities favor slightly different yachts.

A sailing catamaran feels almost purpose-built for the Grenadines. Reliable trade winds make sailing enjoyable, while the wide platform and relatively shallow draft of many catamarans work beautifully around beaches and anchorages. Moving south through the island chain under sail is part of the experience rather than simply transportation between stops.

Motor yachts are excellent if you want to cover more distance, combine Grenada with the Grenadines or minimize the amount of time spent on longer passages.

In the BVI, both options work extremely well.

Sailing catamarans dominate much of the charter scene because conditions and distances are so favorable, but motor yachts can move effortlessly between islands and make it easy to visit several destinations within the same day.

If the sailing itself matters, I would lean toward the Grenadines.

If you simply want the easiest possible Caribbean yacht holiday, the BVI remains difficult to beat.

Choose the BVI if you want:

Short, easy island hopping

Plenty of beach bars and restaurants

Excellent yacht infrastructure

A first-time-friendly cruising ground

A combination of sailing, snorkeling and nightlife

An easy family yacht charter

Choose the Grenadines if you want:

Fewer crowds and yachts

More secluded anchorages

Exceptional snorkeling and marine life

A more authentic Caribbean atmosphere

Mustique, Bequia and the Tobago Cays

A more adventurous sailing experience

Privacy and remote island escapes

For most people taking their first Caribbean yacht charter, the BVI is the easier all-round choice.

But if your idea of the perfect charter is escaping crowded cruising grounds, sailing through beautiful trade-wind passages and anchoring somewhere that still feels genuinely remote, I would choose the Grenadines.

The BVI gives you the Caribbean at its most convenient.
