If you want extraordinary beaches and shallow-water cruising, choose the Bahamas.
If you want sailing, island culture and a more adventurous itinerary, choose the Grenadines.
Beaches, Water & Snorkeling
The Bahamas has an immediate advantage when it comes to sheer water scenery.
The Exumas stretch across more than 100 miles of shallow Bahamian banks, where pale sand beneath the surface creates the almost luminous turquoise water for which the destination is famous. Hundreds of cays, sandbars and protected anchorages give yachts endless opportunities to stop somewhere new for swimming or lunch on the beach.
Wildlife experiences are also a major part of a Bahamas charter. Depending on the itinerary, guests can swim with nurse sharks at Compass Cay, visit the swimming pigs near Staniel Cay, snorkel reefs or spend entire afternoons exploring deserted beaches by tender.
The Grenadines are different.
The islands are greener and more mountainous, and the underwater highlight is undoubtedly the Tobago Cays Marine Park. The small uninhabited cays sit behind a horseshoe reef, creating an extraordinary cruising and snorkeling area where turtles are frequently encountered around the protected waters.
The Grenadines probably offer the more varied scenery above the water.
But if your dream yacht charter is defined by endless white sand, shallow lagoons and extraordinary shades of blue, the Bahamas is difficult to beat.

Steady trade winds and relatively short passages between many of the islands make the region particularly rewarding aboard a sailing yacht or catamaran. Cruising from Bequia to Mustique, Canouan, Mayreau and the Tobago Cays feels like a genuine sailing itinerary rather than simply moving between anchorages.
The passages can also be more exposed. Unlike the exceptionally shallow and often sheltered waters of the Bahamas, some channels between the Grenadine islands are open to Atlantic swell and stronger trade winds.
That makes the Grenadines slightly more adventurous, but also much more satisfying for guests who actually enjoy sailing.
The Bahamas offers a different type of cruising.
In the Exumas, the challenge is often depth rather than distance or wind. The shallow banks reward catamarans and shallow-draft motor yachts, while careful navigation is essential around sandbanks and reefs.
If the yacht itself is primarily your luxury base for swimming, exploring and using the water toys, the Bahamas is superb.
If you want the passage between islands to become part of the experience, choose the Grenadines.

Islands, Restaurants & What You Can Do Ashore
The Grenadines offer more contrast between the islands themselves.
Bequia has a genuine small-island community and a relaxed waterfront around Admiralty Bay. Mustique provides the opposite experience, with private-island exclusivity, luxury villas and Basil's Bar. Canouan brings high-end resorts, while tiny Mayreau remains quiet and largely undeveloped.
Then there are the Tobago Cays, where the focus returns almost entirely to nature.
A week in the Grenadines therefore feels like moving through several different Caribbean personalities rather than simply visiting a succession of beautiful anchorages.
The Bahamas has plenty to explore ashore, but a classic Exumas yacht charter is more heavily centered around the sea. Many of its greatest stops are tiny cays, national park anchorages, sandbars and beaches rather than towns.
That is part of the attraction.
You can spend days hardly thinking about roads, restaurants or nightlife because everything you came for is already around the yacht.
For guests who enjoy mixing cruising with local culture and evenings ashore, however, the Grenadines offer more variety.

Which Is Better for Families, Couples & First-Time Charterers?
For families, I would give the Bahamas a slight advantage.
The Exumas are almost purpose-built for days in and around the water. Children can swim from the yacht, snorkel, paddleboard, use water toys, explore sandbars and encounter wildlife, while many passages can be relatively comfortable in protected conditions.
A power catamaran or shallow-draft motor yacht works particularly well.
The Grenadines are still an excellent family destination, especially for older children who enjoy sailing and snorkeling, but the stronger trade winds and more open passages can produce a more active cruising experience.
For couples and honeymooners, I would lean toward the Grenadines.
Mustique, Tobago Cays, Petit St Vincent, Bequia and secluded anchorages around the island chain create an appealing combination of privacy, natural beauty and understated Caribbean luxury. St Vincent and the Grenadines continue to be recognized as one of the region's quieter choices for travelers seeking seclusion.
For a first yacht charter, the answer depends on what you want.
Choose the Bahamas if you want the yacht holiday to revolve around beaches, swimming and relaxation.
Choose the Grenadines if the idea of actually sailing through the Caribbean is part of the attraction.
Families & water lovers: Bahamas.
Couples & adventurous charterers: Grenadines.
Catamaran or Motor Yacht?
The yacht type can almost decide the destination for you.
If you want a sailing catamaran, I would choose the Grenadines.
The trade winds, island spacing and natural sailing rhythm make the region particularly rewarding under sail. Catamarans also provide excellent stability and plenty of outdoor space once you reach the sheltered side of an island.
If you want a motor yacht, I would lean toward the Bahamas.
Speed allows you to move easily through the long Exumas chain, while shallow-draft motor yachts and power catamarans can take advantage of the destination's shallow banks and anchorages.
Large motor yachts can absolutely cruise the Grenadines, but the destination does not have the same marina-heavy infrastructure found in some other charter regions. Much of the experience revolves around anchoring and mooring rather than spending nights alongside a marina.
